Code of Conduct
The Vision Sciences Society (VSS) is dedicated to the open exchange of ideas and the freedom of thought and expression. We are committed to running a successful meeting that fosters collegiality and celebrates the international and interdisciplinary nature of the Vision Sciences community. These aims and goals require an environment that recognizes the inherent worth of every person and group, and that fosters tolerance, dignity, understanding, and mutual respect.
To help ensure these goals, each presenter, speaker, and attendee must adhere to the following code of conduct. The expected behavior extends to all sessions, activities, events, and informal gatherings during the conference and to any other activities, in-person or virtual, sponsored or managed by VSS.
Participants who do not comply may be barred from attending the remainder of the VSS conference or barred from participating in other VSS activities or meetings, in-person or virtual. The home institution or employer may be informed of allegations against or violations by their faculty members, trainees, employees, or affiliates.
General Behavior
Participants are expected to respect one another and behave in a civil fashion. Members should respect common sense rules for public behavior, personal interaction, common courtesy, and respect for all meeting participants.
Anti-Discrimination
VSS prohibits discrimination at its meeting against individuals on the basis of factors such as race, sex, age, marital status, religion, national origin, ancestry, socio-economic status, physical appearance, or different abilities.
Anti-Harassment
To promote an environment that recognizes the inherent worth of every person and group, VSS is dedicated to providing its members and meeting attendees a harassment-free experience. Harassment is unwelcome or hostile behavior, including speech that intimidates or interferes with a person’s participation or opportunity for participation in a conference, event, or program.
Harassment in any form, including but not limited to, harassment based on national origin, race, religion, sex, or any other protected status will not be tolerated. Harassment includes the use of abusive or degrading language or gestures, intimidation, stalking, harassing photography or recording, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.
Other Unacceptable Behavior
- Publicly sharing screen shots, photographs, video, or audio recording of oral or poster presentations, slides, or question periods without the consent of presenters and/or contributors.
- Making VSS events and resources available to others outside one’s immediate laboratory when membership or registration is required for access. When participating in events, in-person or virtual, attendees must use their own name and not attempt to misrepresent themselves in any way.
- Gaining unauthorized access or making malicious changes to the conference website, conference hosting tools, or any related systems.
- Collecting data without ensuring protocols are in accordance with governing ethical and legal standards.
- Fabrication or misrepresentation of data presented at the conference.
- Inappropriate use of nudity, sexual images, or images that would be reasonably found offensive by the membership.
- Real or implied threat of professional or financial damage or harm.
Violations of code of conduct can be reported to any of the members of the VSS Board of Directors or to Shauney Wilson, the VSS Executive Director and Event Director. Any reports will be handled in the strictest confidence.
Policies have been adapted from other sources including SIGGRAPH and Association for Psychological Sciences.

2022 Graphics Competition Winners
Each year, VSS solicits its membership to submit creative visual images related to the field of vision science, the Society, or the VSS meeting. There are two competitions, Program Cover and Website Banner Competition and the T-Shirt Design Competition. Winning graphic images are featured on the program, abstracts book, signage, and t-shirts.
The Vision Sciences Society is pleased to recognize Wei Hau (“Danny”) Lew, June Kim, and Deyue Yu as the winners of the 2022 Graphics Competition.
Program Cover and Website Banner Competition
Winner: Wei Hau (“Danny”) Lew, University of Houston College of Optometry

All the Shapes and Colors: This design inspired by Bauhaus art uses only basic shapes and colors as an abstract representation of human visual perception. The color shades give an illusion of depth, and lighting to represent the beginning of virtual reality in modern theories of vision. In the program cover, the design also includes sea waves to celebrate in-person VSS once again on the beautiful beach in Florida.
T-Shirt Design Competition
Winner: June Hee Kim, Laboratory of Brain and Cognition, National Institute of Mental Health, NIH, Bethesda, Maryland, United States of America

The t-shirt design consists of an isometric illustration of VSS and a simplified eye drawing to represent the versatility of human visual processing. Depending on the viewer’s perspective (identified with different colors), one can easily recognize letters VSS or see random polygons. The cubic objects were placed in a way to provide various perspectives one can take when viewing and hopefully to spark interest in exploring different views. What to make of these objects relies on our visual system, and it is fascinating how it interprets information to form a meaningful representation of our surroundings.

Water Bottle Design
Winner: Deyue Yu, Ohio State University
This image was submitted to the T-Shirt Design Competition. Although it did not win the t-shirt competition, the review committee loved it and thought that it would be a great design for this year’s water bottles, so an additional winner was added to this year’s competition.

Student-Postdoc Advisory Committee (SPC) Applications
The Vision Sciences Society welcomes applications for three vacancies on the VSS Student-Postdoctoral Advisory Committee. Successful applicants will join the three continuing members of the current VSS Student-Postdoctoral Advisory Committee (SPC).
The mandate of the SPC is to share ideas and proposals about how VSS events, workshops, meeting structure and activities can best meet the needs of trainee members and early career researchers. The SPC participates in the design and operation of VSS events and workshops that are relevant to the needs and interests of early career researchers. Serving on the SPC, as well as facilitating or leading any resulting activities, are also useful professional experiences for engaged trainees.
In past years, SPC members contributed to VSS by designing and operating conference events directed to our trainees and early career researchers. They also provided valuable advice and perspectives to the VSS board about aspects of the conference and the organization that are relevant to these members. Members of the SPC meet both independently and with VSS board members.
Membership is for a period of one year, beginning on the first day of the Annual Meeting, with the opportunity for appointment to a second year.
VSS welcomes and actively seeks applications from students and postdoctoral members whose research spans the range of areas represented in the organization, and who reflect the global membership and aspirations of the VSS membership.
