Synchronizing and Coordinating Multiple Data Acquisition Devices

Tuesday, May 19, 2026, 1:15 – 2:45 pm, Horizons West

Organizers: Marcus Johnson, SR Research Ltd. and Kurt Debono, SR Research Ltd.
Speakers: Kurt Debono and Marcus Johnson

Modern research is increasingly moving beyond single-device data collection. As the complexity of the setup increases, so does the technical challenge of ensuring your devices are “speaking” to one another effectively and that data are being collected in lockstep. In this workshop, we will survey techniques for synchronizing data collection involving multiple research devices (e.g., EEG, fMRI, fNIRs, and others) in the context of experiments that include eye tracking. The goal will be to provide an introduction to device communication methods and protocols, ranging from simple, TTL-based marker synchronization methods to richer, API-based modes of communication. Participants will learn about timing considerations, data set alignments, and real-time data access options for multi-device experimental designs, including real-time co-registration designs.
