VSS is pleased to announce that we’ve formed a Technical Committee to develop the VSS meeting app internally. We see this as an exciting first step toward building something that our community can continue to improve over time. Developing the app within the society allows us to draw on the expertise that already exists among our members while also keeping costs manageable. Our longer-term goal is to develop the app and its underlying platform in a way that could eventually be made available for other scientific societies to use.
Looking beyond the meeting app, we would also like the committee to think more broadly about how VSS might modernize the way it operates, including where AI and other emerging technologies could genuinely be useful. This could include anything from society operations and membership services to new ways for members to find one another, exchange information, and stay connected before, during, and after the meeting.
We are still early in this conversation and are very open to ideas. If you have relevant expertise and would like to contribute to any of these efforts, please do not be shy about letting us know. We would be delighted to hear from you, whether you have a specific idea, a particular skill you would like to put to use, or simply an interest in helping. Please reach out to the VSS office at , and they will pass your message along to the committee.
Committee Members

The winning image of the Website Banner Competition will also be used for the program covers, onsite signage, PowerPoint slides, bulk emails, printed materials, and other places where needed.
The winning image of the T-Shirt Design Competition will be used on the VSS 2027 T-shirt and may also be used for other purposes, such as tote bags, pens, hats, and mugs/water bottles.
You may submit more than one image for consideration and you are allowed to enter images in both competitions. You may submit the same image to both competitions as long as the file format requirements can be met.
Images may be related to scientific content, the Vision Sciences Society, or Seattle and the surrounding area. The image may include the VSS logo or be an alteration of the VSS logo.
The winner of each competition grants VSS unlimited rights to copy, publish, edit, print, and use the images for any purpose, including publishing images online and on other electronic and hard-copy media.
Winning images are chosen by a vote of the VSS Board of Directors.
Submissions for Website Banner Competition must be received no later than September 17, 2026. Submissions for the T-Shirt Design Competition must be received no later than January 8, 2027.
To submit an image for consideration, you must have been active in VSS within the last two years.
Website Banner Competition
The Website Banner Competition is a contest to select an image that will serve as the brand, or theme, of the annual meeting by providing imagery that will be used throughout the VSS meeting. Although the winning image will be used for many purposes, to enter the competition you need to submit proposed images for the primary website banner and the secondary page website banner. Other items will be created using variations of the winning image.
Your proposed primary website banner design will replace the current banner on the VSS website home page. Your secondary page website banner will replace the banner shown at the top of this page. At a minimum, your proposed banner image should include the name of the society and the dates of the meeting.
To enter the Website Banner Competition, please submit two full-color raster images in .jpg or .png format.
The primary website banner image must be 3070 pixels by 534 pixels. The secondary page website banner must be 3070 pixels by 178 pixels.
If your image is chosen as the winning design, in addition to the banner image, you will be asked to provide variations of your image for use on the printed program cover, signs, and other purposes.
The winner of the Website Banner Competition will be awarded $500 USD and will be recognized in the meeting program, on the meeting website, and at the Awards session at the VSS meeting.
Deadline to submit an image for the Website Banner Competition is September 17, 2026. You must have been active in VSS within the last two years to submit an image.
The T-Shirt Design Competition is a contest to select an image for the VSS t-shirt. The image may also be used on other items that require line art.
Two images are needed for the t-shirt: one for the back and one for the breast. The maximum print area for the back image is approximately 11 inches square; the breast image print area is 3″ square. You can submit one image for both purposes or separate images. The images will be printed on black t-shirts and white t-shirts, so the image must be usable on both black an white backgrounds.
The images should include at least the name and year of the meeting (eg: VSS 2027), but may also include other information, such as the meeting dates and location.
T-shirts are printed using a silkscreen process, so the image must be line art that uses a maximum of four spot colors (solid colors, not composite colors). Large areas of solid colors are discouraged as these are more difficult to print and result in an image with a plastic feel that is not comfortable to wear.
To enter the T-Shirt Design Competition, please submit a PDF of your proposed design showing your images as they would appear on a white background and a black background.
If your image is chosen as the winning design, you will be asked to provide your artwork in a scalable vector graphic file, such as Adobe Illustrator or compatible.
The winner of the T-Shirt Design Competition will be awarded $500 USD and will be recognized in the meeting program, on the meeting website, and at the Awards session at the VSS meeting.
Deadline to submit an image for theT-shirt Design Competition is January 8, 2027. You must have been active in VSS within the last two years to submit an image.
Email your images to vss@visionsciences.org as an attachment. One email per submission, please. Specify which competition you are entering in your subject line. Include a brief description of your image that the board will consider when reviewing the submitted images.
Schedule Deadline to submit an image for Website Banner Competition: September 17, 2026 Website Banner Competition image chosen by:October 1, 2026
Deadline to submit an image for T-shirt Design Competition: January 8, 2027 T-shirt image chosen: by January 16, 2027
Each year, VSS holds a Graphics Competition to collect creative visual images related to the field of vision science, the Society, or the VSS meeting. There are two competitions, the Website Banner Competition and the T-Shirt Design Competition. Winning graphic images are featured on the website, program, signage, and t-shirts.
The Vision Sciences Society is pleased to recognize Tasfia Ahsan as this year’s winner of the Website Banner Competition and Laura Soen of the T-Shirt Design Competition.
Website Banner Competition
Winner: Tasfia Ahsan, Freud Lab, York University, Canada
The website banner was inspired by my love of comic book-style art and the research we do at the Freud Lab on action and perception. I’ve always found it interesting how comic books can communicate so many things at once, movement, emotion, and narrative all on a single page. This feels connected to how the brain works, taking in and processing multiple streams of information simultaneously. The banner was my way of bringing those two ideas together.
T-Shirt Design Competition
Winner: Laura Soen, KU Leuven, Belgium
This t-shirt is more than conference merch. It’s a conversation starter. Zoom in with the magnifying glass and start discovering what VSS is all about and where you fit in. Do you study vision with EEG, FMRI, or neural networks? Is VR your tool of choice? Did you spot the dolphin in the ocean and will we see you at the beach BBQ by sunset? Each doodle captures a piece of the VSS experience: cutting-edge science, shared curiosity, spontaneous conversations, and the unmistakable setting of St. Pete’s Beach. Together, they visually map everything people love about VSS.

We’ve concluded another busy and successful five days of sessions in St. Pete Beach. This year VSS had 6 symposia, 200 talks, 941 posters, 38 other events that included workshops, satellites, social events, a great reception on the beach at the Rumfish, and last, but not least, a glowing dance party on the closing night of the meeting. In addition, we hosted a two-day MODVIS meeting prior to VSS and the inaugural one-day Applied Vision Science meeting after VSS. Over 1,650 people attended VSS this year.
Thank you to everyone who joined us at the TradeWinds for a full week of science. We also want to thank our Sponsors and Exhibitors for their continued support.

Lastly, put May 21-25, 2027 in your calendar for VSS 2027 in Seattle, Washington. Hotel reservations for VSS 2027 will open in September, 2026.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, Welcome to VSS 2026!
As always, we have a packed Schedule for the meeting, with almost 1200 posters and talks plus 52 undergraduate just-in-time posters, 6 Symposia, 13 Satellite Events, and 4 workshops. The meeting also includes events that allow for outreach to the public including a 3-Minute-Thesis Competition in which graduate students describe their research to students at St. Petersburg High School and the ever-popular Public Lecture. This year Bevil Conway will talk about visual aesthetics at the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, which lets you see a great talk and a fun museum in one go.
We strive to make it easy for people attending VSS for the first time to feel welcome. As such, we are holding two events to help new VSS attendees to get to know the lay of the land, including an Online Event prior to the meeting and a Lemonade Social Friday evening. The lemonade social is a great place for new attendees and undergraduates to get to know how VSS works and to meet one another so that you will have friends to share a table at the Opening Reception and to visit with throughout the meeting.
There are two major events that happen, allied with VSS, both at the TradeWinds. Just prior to VSS is a satellite meeting, MODVIS, that is specifically about modeling the visual system. New this year is the Applied Vision Science meeting. This takes place Wednesday after VSS and is the inaugural year of an annual meeting that will be the prime venue bringing together basic vision scientists and those who investigate applied vision issues in visual displays, VR and many other applied areas.
VSS remains essentially an international meeting with a large percentage of our participants coming from around the world. The situation in the US and internationally has continued to make it difficult for some people to come to a meeting in Florida. This has reduced the number of submitted abstracts and people coming to the meeting, but fortunately not by a huge amount. We have responded to this by opening up a limited number of talk and poster slots for remote presentation. Coupled with our recent move to provide videos of all the talks to the membership after the meeting, this should allow everyone to participate in VSS in one way or another.
The political situation in the US has had substantial impacts on science and, in particular on science funding. Suggested budgets have been reduced for the main agencies that fund vision research in the US and changes in policy at NSF and NIH have greatly reduced funding rates. VSS has advocated for vision science by signing on to several letters (circulated by FABBS and other groups) that have been delivered to Washington. We certainly will continue to advocate for our members in the US and internationally whenever and wherever possible.
One way we try to help out our members is to help with the costs of attending VSS itself. VSS has an NEI/NIH conference grant, and last year Michael Grubb successfully acquired an NSF grant. Between these two grants we are able to provide travel grants to most US trainees. With support from Elsevier, the Yellott Family Endowment and from your contributions to VSS, we also support a number of international trainees with travel grants. VSS is also continuing our program of Caregiver Grants to support childcare costs at the conference for those traveling with young children.
Returning this year are two resources overseen by our Student-Postdoc Committee (SPC): they have set up Discord channels to facilitate sharing of information about the conference (accommodation, transportation, hot tips for presenting, quick announcements, dinners, childcare, etc.) and our Community Table, which you will find near the registration desk, where a member of the SPC provides information about all our VSS communities: the SPC, Females of Vision et al. (FoVea), the Spark Society, and Visibility, a gathering of LGBTQ+ Vision Scientists and Friends. The Community Table will also provide information and resources for new participants at VSS, as well as information about satellites, workshops and social events being organized to make VSS 2026 the most welcoming and inclusive meeting possible.
One thing is missing this year: a phone App for navigating the meeting. There were many problems with the app we’ve used in previous years, and no end of accurate complaints from our members about its inadequacies. So, while VSS needs to tighten its belt due to the drops in membership and registration, this was one savings that made sense. We continue to provide a PDF of the program through the website.
Congratulations to this year’s VSS award winners! This year’s recipient of the Elsevier/VSS Young Investigator Award is Ilker Yildirim. This year the Davida Teller Award was repurposed as an award for mid-career scientists and the winner is T. Rowan Candy. Finally, the Ken Nakayama Medal for Excellence in Vision Science goes to Nancy Kanwisher. Please come hear them talk about their research in the Awards Session (Monday at 12:30PM).
The 2026 VSS Keynote Lecture (Saturday at 7:30PM) will be given by Dr. Michael Chiang, Director of the National Eye Institute. He will talk about the impact of AI and Data Science on eye care from the perspective of NEI. We are excited to have Dr. Chiang meet the VSS community.
The Business Meeting(Tuesday, 12:15PM) is the best place for you to provide direct input to the VSS Board to help guide VSS to a robust and successful future. We will talk about VSS’ financial situation and the status of future VSS meetings (2027 in Seattle, 2028 in St. Pete Beach, but TBD for future meetings). And, of course, I will introduce your 2026-2027 President: Rich Krauzlis.
VSS remains a time for fun as well as excellent science. Demo Night will take place Monday night as usual with fabulous illusions, games and environments to experience. The time just before Demo Night is unscheduled and is a good time for you to hold a lab dinner or other social event (and there are new restaurant offerings at Tradewinds). Tuesday night will feature the Visibility Social, followed by Club Vision (with VSS member djs) and Chill Vision.
I’d like to thank everyone who makes VSS the special place that it is. This includes our sponsors and exhibitors (and I encourage you to visit all the exhibits), our abstract reviewers and the members of our many external committees. A huge thank you is due to Shauney Wilson and the entire Meeting Perfect crew, who work all year long to make VSS happen so smoothly. And thanks to all of you, the VSS community, for providing the science and spirit that make for such a great meeting.
We look forward to seeing you in May!
